A celebration of creativity within our local music groups

James MacMillan, and a team of composers and singer songwriters, have been working with a couple of community groups, Strings N Things (an Auchinleck guitar and ukulele group) and the Cumnock Area Musical Production Society over the last few months to create the first of 2 community presentations as part of A Musical Celebration of the Coalfields. This work will gather speed and momentum over the next few years, adding school groups and other adult groups as the project develops and grows.

The Tryst is delighted to be part of the Coalfield Communities Landscape Partnership which involves a whole range of organisations which strive for a greener, safer, more creative and sustainable future for East Ayrshire’s coalfields communities. And this partnership has allowed the Tryst to expand its activities in ways that we could never have imagined. Ultimately, our aim is to create a range of musical performances over the next two years, a real Musical Celebration of the Coalfields and a dream of mine since I started thinking about a festival for East Ayrshire.

We are indebted to all of our funders who have helped make this happen: the Coalfield Communities Landscape Partnership, itself funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and all of you who play the National Lottery; The McGlashan Trust; SCOPS Arts Trust; and The Cumnock Tryst Endowment Fund.

During the pandemic when our activities were curtailed we made a film and the themes in this were universal - people, place and community. But it was also very specific to East Ayrshire, a real celebration of a moment in our own lives, the simple, the complex, the present and the memories. We want to carry this inspiration into our music making now, and this morning’s concert is the first stage in bringing this Musical Celebration of the Coalfields to life.
