Jeffrey Fong is a cantonese composer currently based in Montréal, Canada. He studied music composition at McGill Schulich School of Music (BMus 2018’) under the guidance of John Rea and Melissa Hui. He then received mentorship under the distinguished composer and music educator Alan Belkin. Recent engagement includes participating in Orford Musique’s composition workshop, under the guidance of composer Christos Hatzis. As part of the program, his composition Flora was premiered under the direction of Véronique Lacroix, conductor of Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal. In the summer of 2023, Jeffrey participated in an intensive composition workshop hosted by Domaine Forget de Charlevoix, under the guidance of British composer Julian Anderson.
A recent composition Rondo Squilibrato, which is Jeffrey’s take on blending elements of jazz, contemporary, and classical forms will be recorded and released by record label Odd Sounds with collaborative pianist Joanne Kang (from Carnegie Hall’s: “ensemble connect”) as well as acclaimed jazz performers Jim Doxas (drums) and Adrian Vedady (bass).
Notable upcoming projects include a commission for a newly formed Ensemble Éclat, as well as a commission for a new ATMA Classique album with the support of the Canadian Art Council, to be released in 2025.
To Jeffrey, the term “accessibility” by no means contains negative connotations. For him, accessible-sounding music is not equal to giving up artistic quality and intricacy. Jeffrey’s musical vision aims to create strong communication with the audiences, and deliver touching emotional voyages through the music.
