Musical talent and witty banter from our national treasures!

Fiddler Aly Bain and accordionist Phil Cunningham are two of the most celebrated musicians on the Scottish traditional scene. By the time they began working together in 1988, they were already renowned for their previous accomplishments. Bain was a founding member of the Boys of the Lough, a group whose repertoire includes both Scottish and Irish influences. Cunningham became a member of the famous Silly Wizard at the age of sixteen, launching a prolific and diverse musical career. The duo first worked together on a television series in 1988 and embarked on their first tour shortly after. They were so well-received that they have been touring together ever since.

It is with great excitement that I am able to welcome Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham to The Cumnock Tryst. It was in 1988 that they came together to work on a television series. You could say ‘the rest is history’. It was the beginning of a remarkable working relationship and friendship that has endured and continued to thrive taking them all over the world. 34 years on, they are filling not only small village halls, but all of our major performance venues. Not only have they been described as ‘the best traditional musicians you are ever likely to hear’ they also have a reputation for their irrepressible sense of fun and quick-witted story telling.
